Now copy the contents of the folder you’re in over to /usr/share/skype – so type: 'cp * /usr/share/skype' If you don’t feel comfortable doing that just follow along. If you would like to create a folder there and make a link from /usr/share/skypego ahead – I leave that as an exercise for the reader. It should be noted here that according to the Linux Standards Base skype should go into /opt/skype. Now make a folder under /usr/share/skype (that’s where skype’s README suggests to put it). So type ‘su’ and type in the root password you used when you set up SLED.

Now you’re going to have to ‘su’ to root in order to install skype to the right places. To go into the folder that just got created. – that will unpack the archive into a folder on the desktop named “skype_static-1.4.0.99”. In the terminal type 'tar -jxf skype_static-1.4.0.99.tar.bz2' The version might be newer – please correct the commands here if it is. You should be able to do an ‘ls’ and see a file named something like “skype_static-1.4.0.99.tar.bz2” Now, right click on the desktop and select ‘Open Terminal’ to open a GNOME terminal. Select “Save to disk” and save it to the Desktop. When you click on “Static” Firefox will ask you if you want to open the file with “File roller” or if you want to save it to disk. Don’t download the openSUSE rpm because it won’t install correctly in SLED 10 (at least when I tried it wouldn’t). Go to and select the “Static” download (“static” means that the binary is all inclusive and has the libraries it needs statically compiled into it – hence the name).
